What is the difference between Therapy and Coaching?
There are a number of activities that a person can engage in that could improve aspects of their life, whether or not they have ADHD.
For example, breathing exercises or meditation are an excellent strategy to help calm the body and mind.
Yoga is another brilliant way to start the day, and Pilates can assist a person’s recovery when going through physiotherapy.
Having a Mentor is a great way to learn new skills, by being taught how to do new activities in the way the Mentor conducts them.
A learning buddy system can offer similar benefits.
Social meet ups are fantastic opportunities to lift one’s mood.
Therapy can also help. Therapy involves a thorough assessment of needs, be they developmental, revisiting trauma, mental health needs, systemic factors, etc.
Similarly, Counselling is a talking therapy that involves a trained therapist listening to you and helping you find ways to deal with emotional issues.
These Professions are all very skilled, and can offer fantastic benefits. They can work very well alongside ADHD Coaching.
Coaching is different. The main focus is on moving forward. Jointly setting goals by addressing your strengths in order to achieve success, whilst avoiding burnout and not getting in your own way.
Coaching will identify measurable results from your goals so you will know when you have achieved them, then we’ll celebrate them together.
Coaching will not aim to coach your ADHD itself. That would be where a psychologist would come in.
I am Autistic and have ADHD myself, so I have my own lived experience. However, my journey does not necessarily mean that what worked for me will work for you.
We’ll endeavour to have fun, and I may ask your permission to share my experiences if I believe they are relevant to your circumstances. I may offer certain snippets of advice, and mentor you occasionally. I may suggest some of the above Professions as well as Coaching.
But sessions will always be your time, for you. And any lived experiences or advice I would share would be in order to help you in pursuit of your goals.
I’m not a Mental Health Practitioner, or your Mentor. I’m certainly not a qualified Therapist, Counsellor or any of the other excellent examples I have mentioned.
I am a CPD-certified ADHD Coach though, awarded by the Association for Coaches accredited ADHD Works.
Together, we’ll use tailored approaches to overcome any struggles you may face, building sustainable habits to empower you.
Coaching is not a one size fits all. I focus on executive functioning to provide a starting point to help you on your journey.
